Library Updates, including JSTOR news!

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="583"] Students from Bethany Keenan's Western Civ class practice their formation on the quad with a familiar building in the background, with Professor Keenan leading the way.[/caption]

Hi everyone! This post is to update campus on several bits of library news

1. First, an update surrounding the download of PDFs from JSTOR when using Firefox as your web browser. As of right now, it appears that the problem has been resolved; files will download normally, with users then able to open the PDF following the download. This is an important reminder though, that if you run into issues using any of the college's databases, please let us know! Notices from users are one of the ways in which we are alerted most quickly to problems or issues with our online resources, and by letting us know, we can get started fixing things.

2. Regular evening hours at the library reference desk are now in place. There are student reference workers available to answer research questions and provide library help in the evenings from 8-10:30 PM, Sunday through Wednesday night. If you need help finding something when you're working on stuff during the week, Aura and Andrew are there to help!

3. The library will be hosting several events throughout the month of October, including our fall book sale, an author visit and reading, and the first "Perrine Presents" event of the semester. Please keep checking the blog or the library website for additional news on these exciting events!

Library Open House Wrap Up!

Thanks to everyone who came by the library last Friday morning, as the Stewart Memorial Library hosted its first Open House as part of the Orientation Week schedule.  We had more than 40 incoming and current students come by and check out the library while participating in our scavenger hunt, decorating doughnuts, taking cut-out photos, and playing bags and mini-golf.  The staff loved meeting new students, and we're hoping that the library can build on this experience as we try to figure out the best way welcome new and returning students to the library.  For the new students, we also hosted giveaways of several prizes.  Drumroll, please, as we present our winners!

2nd Runner Up: Michael Chace, with a gift card to Brewed Awakenings!

Runner up 2

1st Runner Up: Marissa Franke, with a gift card to the Coe College Bookstore!

Runner up 1
And our GRAND PRIZE WINNER, Elizabeth Haynes, with a $50 giftcard for Target!

Grand prize

Thank  you again to everyone that came and participated in the Open House, and keep checking out the Facebook page and this blog for more updates on library events!

Finals Time Stress Break: Massages at the library!

Back due to popular demand, the library will once again be sponsoring massages for students to help them de-stress in the time leading up to final exams.  Massages will be FREE to any current Coe College student that signs up, though we do have a limited number of massages available.  Students from LaJames will be providing chair massages in the Perrine Gallery from 10:30 AM-4:00 PM on Friday, April 27th.  As stated, the massages will be free of cost to current Coe students and last for 10 minutes.  Students need to arrive at the library and check in with the masseurs 5 minutes prior to their massage, or the time slot will be made available to any student that was unable to schedule a massage at another time.  We will also have a limited amount of table massages available, also for 10 minutes, in the library classroom.  Sign-ups will begin tomorrow, April 24th, at 8:30 AM in the reference department office and will go on until all slots are taken.  If you have any questions, please inquire with Katelyn or Harlene in the reference office.  Good luck during finals week, everyone!

Common Hour Follow-up

Thanks to everyone that attended the library-hosted Common Hour last Friday, 4/13/2012.  Those who attended had the chance to check out the Writing Center's new digs in the lower level of Gage, while listening to the library staff speak on topics covered at the 2012 Library Technology Conference and how those issues impact Coe.  There are a few points that we wanted to follow up on, for those whom are interested.  We spoke a great deal on institutional repositories and digital commons, and Macalester, the conference's host, has a great one.  Many of the presentations from the conference have made their data available online, at Digital Commons @ Macalester.  Jill Jack, the library's director, attended a presentation that showed a correlation between library usage and student success and retention, that she spoke on last Friday; those interested in viewing that presentation's data can check it out here. There are some interesting things coming up on the horizon for libraries and institutions in higher education, and we thank all of the members of the Coe community that came out last Friday to hear about some of the thoughts that we have on those issues.

Library Technology Conference 2012

If you noticed that the library seemed a bit empty last week, and the blog a bit barren, it was.  The reason why?  Several members of the staff had the chance to attend the Library Technology Conference at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota.  The conference was great, and the library will be speaking on some of our experiences there at the next library-hosted Common Hour on April 13th.  In the meanwhile, a great deal of the material presented there was really informative, and conveniently enough, available online!  If you want to check out some of the presentation materials, head to the Digital Commons at Macalester. The general conference website can be found at this link, or just click on the banner above. We hope to see you in a few weeks when we talk about what we learned!

Library Common Hour, 2/24/2011

This Friday, several members of the library's staff will be presenting as part of Friday's Common Hour here at Coe from 3-4(ish) in Stuart Hall 205.  Speaking at the common hour:

  • Laura Riskedahl, AV Librarian

  • Hongbo Xie, Tech Services Librarian

  • Harlene Hansen, Reference Assistant

  • Katelyn Wazny, Head of Reference

  • Jill Jack, Library Director

The presentation will consist of small segments covering tips and tricks for some of the college's many databases, along with taking the opportunity to highlight some new offerings from the library as well. A question and answer session, moderated by Jill, will then follow, giving members of the Coe community a chance to ask about any aspect of the library they have been wondering about as of late.  The library's staff would really love the chance to get some feedback from a variety of members of the campus, while also having the chance to teach folks how to research more effectively.  We also think we'll be showing off some ways to use the databases that people might not realize are possible.  Top that all off with the fact that refreshments will be served, and you've got a pretty good Friday afternoon ahead of you.  If you have time, please come on Friday, and the library staff will do our best impress you!

Library Supporting MLK Day Event

Last night, over 40 Coe members gathered in Kesler Auditorium to participate in a movie showing, Do the Right Thing, and students/faculty panel discussion in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. The event was hosted by the Committee on Diversity. The library helped set up the movie showing and presented a table display during the event. The display included photographs, newspaper clips and other archive materials on Dr. King’s campus visit in 1962, and the AASEO's (African American Self Education Organization's) activities on campus during the civil rights movement of the 60's and 70's.

Thank you to everyone who helped with the event and attended last night. It was a success!

SOPA, and how it will (possibly) impact your day tomorrow

As some of you might know, several websites will be blacking out tomorrow as a protest against SOPA, the "Stop Online Piracy Act," a bill currently under consideration in the US House of Representatives.  Although there will be a number of smaller websites shutting down for the day, here's the list of larger websites that are planning shutting down Wednesday, January 18.

As you can see, some of the sites listed receive pretty heavy traffic, especially Wikipedia as it consistently ranks in the top 10 most visited websites on the Internet. The library's staff wanted to make sure that everyone understands the blackout is internet-wide, and not just an issue at Coe.  If you want to read more about SOPA and how it could impact your daily life online, here's a great explanation I found: http://news.cnet.com/8301-31921_3-57329001-281/how-sopa-would-affect-you-faq/.
