Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

As the library main floor has stated it is National Honey month! The month of September also pays homage to something else, Hispanic heritage.

What does this have to do with the library? The library has a plethora of Hispanic authors for you to read as well as their biographies! Read authors like Sandra Cisneros, who graduated from the Iowa Writer's Workshop and was taught by Gordon Mennega himself! Read Gary Soto a poet and writer focused in Chicano youth fiction. Prefer classic? How about the ever famous Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Carlos Fuentes (I recommend The Death of Artemio Cruz), and Isabel Allende!

Not really into books? The AV department has a wide variety of Hispanic subject movies that are both in Spanish and English. There's Selena, about a great Tejana singer and the tragic result of her fame, starring Jenifer Lopez. Or try Vicky Christina Barcelona to see Penelope Cruz do her thing! For practice with Spanish watch Volver or Biutiful.

Check out some animated fun from Studio Ghibli!

Looking for a fun summer movie? Our Studio Ghibli collection is a great place to start, and good for all ages. Studio Ghibli is a Japanese animation studio founded by acclaimed directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata. Studio Ghibli focuses on films filled with whimsical fantasy elements and often features strong heroines. Here’s just three of the 18 that have been produced by the studio:

My Neighbor Totoro (1988) tells the story of two young girls who move with their father to the Japanese countryside and encounter many friendly woodland spirits, named Totoros. The main Totoro helps older sister Satsuki find her 4 year old sister Mei when she turns up missing.

Spirited Away (2001) is the story of Chihiro, a strong-willed 10 year old girl. She moves with her parents to the suburbs and one night discovers an alternate reality inhabited by thousands of mysterious spirits. When Chihiro’s parents are transformed into pigs by a witch, she takes a job at a bathhouse for these spirits to free herself and her parents from this alternate reality.

Pom Poko (1994) chronicles the struggle of shapeshifting raccoons, called tanuki, that are fighting to save their home from urban development. The lazy tanuki put themselves through a strict training regimen so they are able to utilize their shapeshifting powers to trick the humans and evil foxes invading their habitat.

Celebrate Earth Day with these titles!

Earth day is April 22nd, and the Audiovisual Department has got you covered with a great display of films to help you celebrate and contemplate. Here are three titles that will help get you in the spirit:

The 11th Hour (2008), narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio, outlines the damage already done to the environment, while providing hope for the future in the form of ‘green’ technology. Showing images of collapsing glaciers and floods, the program offers solace from such experts as Steven Hawking and sustainable-design experts.

Agnés Varda, a French documentary filmmaker, travels her native country documenting the actions of gleaners in The Gleaners and I (2000). These gleaners are essentially modern-day scavengers, who search for food and other discarded products in dumpsters and refuse containers. Varda highlights their disregard for wastefulness and consumerism.

Andy Goldsworthy’s Rivers and Tides (2004) is a documentary about Scottish artist Andy Goldsworthy, who works exclusively with materials from nature. He builds ephemeral sculptures from such materials as branches, ice, and loose rock, and installs them within their original environment. His sculptures eventually become part of the landscape, where they become overgrown by plants or washed over by rising tides.

Celebrate Women's History Month!

March is Women's History Month, and the Audiovisual Department has plenty of films on display to help you celebrate! Here are a few favorites:

A Walk to Beautiful is a documentary that features the journey of five Ethiopian women that are seeking treatment for their obstetric fistulas, which have left them ostracized by their husbands and communities. Their journey to the hospital in the capital, Addis Ababa, is filled with many trials and hope at the end of the day.

Iron Jawed Angels is a feature film that details the US women’s suffrage efforts of Alice Paul and others, which ultimately ends in the imprisonment of these protestors. Their hunger strike while in prison gains the attention of then President Woodrow Wilson, and ultimately their efforts help to gain women the right to vote by the passing of the 19th Amendment.

Voices Unveiled is a documentary that follows the lives of three Turkish women: an activist, an artist, and a dancer as they maneuver struggles with gender equality within a society highlighted by Islamic values. The film highlights how their daily lives challenge the traditional roles of Turkish women.

Film Clubs on Campus

Hunger Games fever?

Are you psyched to see the 'Hunger Games' trilogy open in theaters in March? Before Jennifer Lawrence was fighting authority as Katniss in the 'Hunger Games', she was fighting for her family (and still hunting for food) as Ree in 'Winter's Bone.' 'Winter's Bone won the Grand Jury Prize for Best Picture at the Sundance Film Festival in 2010, and Lawrence was even nominated for an Oscar for her performance. It's a gritty, raw film that is not to be missed! Head on downstairs to the AV Department and check out 'Winter's Bone' today!
