Looking for new films?

The Audiovisual Browsing Collection consists of current popular and feature film DVDs which are available for checkout for a three day loan period. Items may be renewed by calling the department or requesting renewal at the desk. The Browsing area is located just to the left of the Audiovisual desk in the library basement. Come check out some new blockbuster films, documentaries, and TV series!

Celebrate Earth Day with these titles!

Earth day is April 22nd, and the Audiovisual Department has got you covered with a great display of films to help you celebrate and contemplate. Here are three titles that will help get you in the spirit:

The 11th Hour (2008), narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio, outlines the damage already done to the environment, while providing hope for the future in the form of ‘green’ technology. Showing images of collapsing glaciers and floods, the program offers solace from such experts as Steven Hawking and sustainable-design experts.

Agnés Varda, a French documentary filmmaker, travels her native country documenting the actions of gleaners in The Gleaners and I (2000). These gleaners are essentially modern-day scavengers, who search for food and other discarded products in dumpsters and refuse containers. Varda highlights their disregard for wastefulness and consumerism.

Andy Goldsworthy’s Rivers and Tides (2004) is a documentary about Scottish artist Andy Goldsworthy, who works exclusively with materials from nature. He builds ephemeral sculptures from such materials as branches, ice, and loose rock, and installs them within their original environment. His sculptures eventually become part of the landscape, where they become overgrown by plants or washed over by rising tides.

Mauricio Lasansky, 1914—2012

Mauricio Lasansky, an Argentinian-born artist who established the printmaking workshop at the University of Iowa, passed away last Monday at the age of 97. Lasansky was a very prolific Iowa artist, and Stewart Memorial Library at Coe is lucky enough to have two of his etchings. “Mr. President: Study of Lincoln” and “Einstein” are two of the over 180 works of art hanging in the library. They hang just behind the Reference Desk, keeping a wise watch over the students at the computers.

Celebrate Women's History Month!

March is Women's History Month, and the Audiovisual Department has plenty of films on display to help you celebrate! Here are a few favorites:

A Walk to Beautiful is a documentary that features the journey of five Ethiopian women that are seeking treatment for their obstetric fistulas, which have left them ostracized by their husbands and communities. Their journey to the hospital in the capital, Addis Ababa, is filled with many trials and hope at the end of the day.

Iron Jawed Angels is a feature film that details the US women’s suffrage efforts of Alice Paul and others, which ultimately ends in the imprisonment of these protestors. Their hunger strike while in prison gains the attention of then President Woodrow Wilson, and ultimately their efforts help to gain women the right to vote by the passing of the 19th Amendment.

Voices Unveiled is a documentary that follows the lives of three Turkish women: an activist, an artist, and a dancer as they maneuver struggles with gender equality within a society highlighted by Islamic values. The film highlights how their daily lives challenge the traditional roles of Turkish women.

Stop on down to the AV Department and use our newly remodeled editing room with three Mac stations for all of your editing needs! The editing room is open and available for students to use during the hours that AV is open. As an added bonus, if you stop by during the hours of 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM Monday-Friday, Laura or Linda will be there to help you out with your editing projects! Stop down and see us today!

Hunger Games fever?

Are you psyched to see the 'Hunger Games' trilogy open in theaters in March? Before Jennifer Lawrence was fighting authority as Katniss in the 'Hunger Games', she was fighting for her family (and still hunting for food) as Ree in 'Winter's Bone.' 'Winter's Bone won the Grand Jury Prize for Best Picture at the Sundance Film Festival in 2010, and Lawrence was even nominated for an Oscar for her performance. It's a gritty, raw film that is not to be missed! Head on downstairs to the AV Department and check out 'Winter's Bone' today!
